Desmond Rayner was born in 1928. Having left school at fourteen, he invested a considerable amount of time in evening classes - studying technical drawing, drama and commercial art at St Martin's School of Art. He was in the R.A.F from 1946 to 1949, after which he was admitted to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Rayner worked in the theatre until 1957 when he joined the world of advertising and PR - his eventual departure allowed him to finally concentrate on his own painting. In 1983, he had a solo exhibition of his New York paintings at the Barbican in London. In 1985, his solo show at Wylma Wayne was part of the American Festival of Arts - Rayner was the only British painter invited to participate, due to the large number of American subjects covered by his work. Another major exhibition was held in 1992 at The Building Centre in London.
Rayner’s attention to detail and confidence with colour is evident in his vibrant abstract paintings. His understanding and appreciation of architecture also permeates much of his work. Rayner's work is held in private collections in Australia, Canada and the USA, in addition to a considerable number in the UK.
