Neil Stokoe was born in 1935, just outside Durham. He started his studies in 1953 at the Sunderland College of Art and then travelled to London to study at the Royal College of Art (1959-62: the same year as David Hockney, Ron Kitaj, Frank Bowling and Derek Boshier). He was awarded a Continuation Scholarship to study there until 1964.
Stokoe exhibited at the John Moores, Liverpool in 1963 and 1967. He taught at Wimbledon School of Art from 1963 to 2000 - initially teaching Art History, then painting, and finally the Foundation Course from 1966 until his retirement. His work is included in the Arts Council Collection, as well as numerous private collections. Stokoe’s paintings often look at the arrival and departure of individuals and the underlying tensions. Recent work has addressed the suffering of solitary individuals, often isolated, pensive or pained. He contrasts thick, heavy brush strokes and textured paint, with a more controlled painting style.
Neil lives and works in London.
